Basanti

Bhisham Sahni (1915–2003) was an iconic Indian writer, playwright, and actor widely considered a giant of modern Hindi literature. He is globally celebrated for his masterpiece novel Tamas, which vividly detailed the tragedy of Partition. Sahni was honored with prestigious accolades, including the Sahitya Akademi Award (1975) and the Padma Bhushan (1998) for his massive contribution to literature.

The story maps the life of Basanti, a feisty and fearless young woman whose life thickens with challenges over time. She spends her childhood playing hide and seek with an overbearing father, safely dodges a forced marriage to a crippled old tailor, and eventually elopes with a handsome young man. Unwilling to let anyone suppress her free spirit, she even rejects the typical benevolence of her employer and confidante, Shyama bibi. Set against the loud, thunderous backdrop of structural slum demolitions in Delhi, her story highlights the immense psychological strength required by marginalized women to claim their own freedom
