This book is a military-history and battlefield guide to the Battles of Imphal and Kohima in 1944, fought during the Burma Campaign of the Second World War. Katoch combines the historical narrative with maps and present-day photographs of the battlefields, making it useful not only for reading about the campaign but also for understanding the actual terrain.

Hemant Singh Katoch is an independent scholar and consultant based in New Delhi. His research has focused on the battles of Imphal and Kohima of 1944 and he has pioneered battlefield tours around them. He has also worked for several years for the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Switzerland and Myanmar. He has had stints with the United Nations World Food Programme in Timor-Leste and with the International Committee of the Red Cross in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The book tells the story of Japan's 1944 attempt to invade India, the desperate Allied defence of Imphal and Kohima, the involvement of Indian soldiers on opposing sides, and how the Japanese defeat became the turning point that eventually led to the Allied reconquest of Burma.
