Gopinath Mohanty (1914–1991) was one of the major architects of modern Indian literature and one of the most celebrated writers in Odia. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1955, the Jnanpith Award in 1973 and the Padma Bhushan in 1981. His extensive body of work includes novels, short-story collections, plays, biographies, critical essays and translations.
Oblivion and Other Stories presents twenty stories written over a period of more than fifty years. Mohanty turns his attention to people living on the margins of society—poor families, tribal communities and ordinary individuals whose lives are shaped by poverty, social hierarchy and exclusion. The stories recreate the social realities of mid-twentieth-century Odisha while examining the enduring effects of class, caste, dispossession and limited access to education.
