Gabriel García Márquez (1927–2014) was one of the most influential Latin American writers of the twentieth century and a leading figure associated with magical realism. His major works include One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Autumn of the Patriarch, Chronicle of a Death Foretold and Love in the Time of Cholera. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982.
Florentino Ariza falls deeply in love with Fermina Daza when they are young, but their relationship is disrupted when Fermina marries the respected physician Juvenal Urbino. Florentino never abandons his hope of being with her again and carries his devotion for more than half a century.
After Dr Urbino’s death, Florentino finally has another opportunity to approach Fermina. Their renewed relationship forces both to confront the realities of ageing, memory, desire and the meaning of lifelong love. The novel examines romantic passion alongside marriage, social expectations, mortality and the complicated ways people seek companionship and fulfilment.
