Meet the Author

Khushwant Singh was one of India's best-known writers, journalists and columnists. He edited publications including The Illustrated Weekly of India, National Herald and Hindustan Times, and wrote celebrated works such as Train to Pakistan, Delhi, The Company of Women and A History of the Sikhs. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2007.

Book Summary

Burial at Sea follows Victor Jai Bhagwan, a gifted young Indian who returns from university in England with a strong belief in industrial development and modernisation. Although he admires Mahatma Gandhi, Victor disagrees with Gandhi's vision for India's economic future and eventually becomes a hugely successful industrialist.

As Victor reaches middle age, his carefully constructed life is disrupted by his passionate relationship with a mysterious tantric woman who combines spirituality, sensuality and manipulation. Their relationship draws him away from his earlier ambitions and becomes closely connected with his eventual decline.

With characteristic irreverence, Khushwant Singh examines wealth, political ideals, religion, sexuality, family and the contradictions of a rapidly changing India. The novel is at once comic, sensual and critical of the worlds of privilege and power.
