The story centres on Buta Singh, a shrewd government official working with the British, and his ambitious son Sher Singh, who is increasingly drawn toward rebellion against colonial rule. Their political differences become intertwined with complicated family relationships, particularly through Sher's wife Champak and his mother Sabhrai. The novel explores loyalty, ambition, tradition, desire and the tensions created by India's struggle for freedom.
Khushwant Singh was one of India's best-known writers, journalists and columnists. He edited prominent publications including The Illustrated Weekly of India and Hindustan Times, and wrote extensively about Indian history, society, politics and human relationships. His celebrated works include Train to Pakistan, Delhi and I Shall Not Hear the Nightingale. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan and later the Padma Vibhushan for his contribution to literature and public life.
Set in 1942, the novel follows the Singh family as India experiences growing political and religious tensions. Buta Singh's cooperation with the British places him increasingly at odds with his son Sher Singh, whose rebellious ambitions reflect the wider nationalist movement. Meanwhile, Champak challenges traditional expectations surrounding women and marriage, while Sabhrai provides strength and stability within the family. A brutal murder ultimately deepens the divisions between father and son, husband and wife, and individuals caught between personal loyalties and a nation demanding change.
