Suleiman Charitra

The work centres on the story of David and Bathsheba, portraying desire, attraction, love and their consequences through the classical Sanskrit aesthetic of shringara rasa, or the erotic mode. Written by a Hindu poet for a Muslim patron, Suleiman Charitra represents an unusual meeting of Indian, Islamic and biblical literary traditions.

Kalyana Malla was an esteemed poet associated with the court of the Lodhi prince Lad Khan in the early sixteenth century. He is also known for Ananga Ranga, a celebrated Sanskrit work on love and sexuality. Suleiman Charitra demonstrates his ability to adapt a non-Indian narrative into the literary conventions of classical Sanskrit.

Suleiman Charitra retells the biblical narrative of David and Bathsheba through the perspective and poetic conventions of Sanskrit literature. Their meeting, David's attraction to Bathsheba, his pursuit of her and their eventual union are presented using the rich imagery and emotional vocabulary of shringara rasa.
