Set in 373 CE, the story begins in the forests of Malwa, where Deva rescues Darshini, a young courtesan. This encounter connects him with his closest companions—the loyal general Saba Virasena and the great poet Kalidas. Their friendship shapes their destinies as Deva transforms from an uncertain prince into Chandragupta Vikramaditya, one of ancient India’s most celebrated rulers.
The novel explores the conflict between personal desires and royal duty. As Deva seeks glory and builds an empire, his decisions affect his friendships, relationships and identity as a ruler.
Nandini Sengupta is a writer and journalist based in Pondicherry. Her interest in ancient Indian history developed after researching the Ajanta and Ellora caves, which led her to study the Gupta period extensively. The King Within is her first work of historical fiction.
The King Within follows Deva, the younger son of Emperor Samudragupta, whose life changes after he rescues Darshini in the forests of Malwa. Along with General Saba Virasena and poet Kalidas, he experiences friendship, loyalty, love and the challenges of royal responsibility.
From a prince facing uncertainty, Deva rises to become Chandragupta Vikramaditya, a powerful monarch of the Gupta Empire. However, his pursuit of greatness comes with personal costs, as the demands of kingship force him to make difficult choices.
Through a blend of historical events and imaginative storytelling, the novel presents a dramatic portrait of leadership, ambition and the human struggles behind the creation of an empire.
