The unnamed narrator is a successful author living in Paris whose wife Esther disappears without explanation. As he tries to understand what happened, he meets Mikhail, a friend of Esther's who offers clues about her disappearance. His search takes him from France through Spain and Croatia and eventually towards Central Asia.
The novel uses the idea of the Zahir—something that becomes impossible to stop thinking about—to explore the nature of obsession, relationships, freedom, love and personal transformation.
Paulo Coelho is a Brazilian novelist best known for The Alchemist. His other works include The Pilgrimage, Brida, The Fifth Mountain, Eleven Minutes, The Witch of Portobello and Adultery. His writing frequently explores spirituality, personal journeys and the search for meaning.
The story begins when the narrator discovers that his wife Esther has disappeared. Although he has achieved wealth and fame as a writer, her absence leaves him deeply unsettled. He becomes increasingly obsessed with finding out where she went and why she left.
During his search, he encounters Mikhail, who had accompanied Esther and knows something about her journey. The narrator gradually learns that Esther had been searching for a deeper sense of peace and freedom, leading him to reconsider his own marriage, ambitions and identity.
