Landscapes of Loss: The Story of an Indian Drought

• The book examines the human and social consequences of a recurring drought that has affected Marathwada for years. Through stories of marginal farmers, Dalits, landless workers, farm widows and children, it explores crop loss, debt, migration and the wider agrarian crisis in rural India.

• Kavitha Iyer is a journalist who has spent around two decades reporting on communities living on the margins. Her work has covered India’s farm crisis, land rights, farmer suicides, distress migration and urbanisation.

Landscapes of Loss tells the story of Marathwada through the experiences of people affected by recurring drought. It examines how water scarcity, agricultural losses, debt and limited livelihood opportunities affect rural families, while also connecting the region’s problems to wider patterns of agrarian distress in India.
