Set against the political uncertainty of post-Soviet Central Asia, the novel follows several interconnected characters, including Tessa, a mother still in love with Rahul; Lance, an aid worker; Hugo, Rahul’s supervisor; and Nargis, a Tajik translator with a secret. Their experiences reveal the emotional and ethical complexities of humanitarian work, relationships and life in a region affected by conflict.
Marion Molteno is an award-winning novelist whose life and work span different countries and cultures. She grew up in South Africa, opposed apartheid as a student, worked in education and refugee support, and served as a policy adviser with Save the Children. Her experiences across Africa, Asia and Europe inform her fiction.
When Rahul Khan, a UN peace negotiator working in Tajikistan, is kidnapped by rebels, those connected to him must confront their own secrets, regrets and emotional attachments. As hope for his safe return diminishes, Tessa, Lance, Hugo and Nargis struggle to understand their responsibilities and find ways to move forward. The novel combines political tension with an intimate exploration of love, courage, friendship and difficult choices.
