Arunava Varman leads a quiet life as a schoolteacher after retiring from the civil service. His reserved personality contrasts sharply with the imaginative storyteller he becomes in the company of his friend Tapan.
His stories initially provide Tapan with an escape from the routine of bureaucratic life. But over time, Tapan begins to question the truth behind Arunava's accounts. As inconsistencies emerge, the novel gradually shifts from an entertaining collection of tales into an intriguing exploration of memory, identity, friendship and hidden truths.
