The story centres on two patients admitted to room no. 509. The first is a nineteen-year-old medical student suffering from an incurable disease. Despite knowing that her life is approaching its end, she values every moment and every breath.

The second is a twenty-five-year-old drug addict whose organs are gradually failing. Unlike the young woman, he has little desire to prolong his life. Their contrasting attitudes towards death create the emotional core of the novel.

Two doctors attempt to save both patients, even when doing so means confronting professional risks and the ghosts of their own pasts. As the final days unfold, the patients and doctors undergo profound changes, discovering the meaning of hope, compassion and the preciousness of life.
