Lore of the Land: Storytelling Traditions of India

Mohini comes from a legendary family of storytellers, but she does not believe storytelling is her talent. When she runs away from home, a mysterious spirit takes her on a magical journey across India. Along the way, she discovers the many creative ways Indians have preserved and shared stories through generations.

Nalini Ramachandran is an Indian author who writes for young readers across genres including history, mythology, mystery, horror, biography and folklore. She has also worked with Tinkle and conducts creative-writing and storytelling workshops. Her books include Detective Sahasasimha and APJ Abdul Kalam: One Man, Many Missions.

The story follows Mohini, a young girl expected to continue her family’s storytelling legacy. After escaping the pressure of creating a story, she encounters a spirit who takes her on a remarkable journey through India. She learns about different storytelling forms—from traditional oral tales and paintings to shadow puppetry, sculptures and dance dramas. Ultimately, Mohini discovers that storytelling is not merely entertainment; it is a powerful way of preserving a community’s culture, history, beliefs and identity.
