Shahidul Zahir (1953–2008) was a Bangladeshi writer known for his distinctive use of surrealism, folklore, oral storytelling and magical realism. His relatively small body of work has been translated and widely discussed in South Asian literary circles.

The collection brings together ten stories featuring neighbourhoods, families and ordinary people caught in unusual circumstances. A colony trapped in a strange sense of time, ravens following a troubled couple, a magician selling addictive figs and mischievous monkeys are among its memorable situations. Translated from Bengali by V. Ramaswamy, the stories use the fantastic to explore identity, community, memory and the realities of post-independence Bangladesh.
