The book takes the reader into a part of India that is geographically distant from the country's major metropolitan centres but is strategically and culturally important.

Kundra spent eight years working in the Northeast, including in Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. He uses these experiences to describe the region from an administrator's perspective while also bringing in conversations with people living there

Ashish Kundra is an Indian Administrative Service officer of the 1996 batch from the Arunachal Pradesh–Goa–Mizoram Union Territory cadre.

Over his career, he has held administrative positions in Chandigarh, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and New Delhi. He has also worked with the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry as Private Secretary.

The book begins by introducing Northeast India as a region of enormous cultural and geographical diversity. It consists of communities with different languages, ethnic identities, histories and traditions.

Kundra then describes the challenges that have historically affected the region, including geographical isolation, limited connectivity, political conflict and insurgency.
