The book combines a translation of Shantideva's root text with commentary by Thrangu Rinpoche. Its ten chapters cover the benefits of bodhichitta, confession, commitment, mindfulness, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom and dedication. The famous ninth chapter explores the Buddhist understanding of emptiness.
Shantideva was an eighth-century Indian Buddhist scholar and practitioner associated with the Mahayana tradition. His Bodhicaryavatara became one of the most influential texts on the Bodhisattva path.
Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche was a renowned Tibetan Buddhist master and scholar of the Kagyu tradition. He was also appointed as a tutor to the Seventeenth Karmapa and was known for making complex Buddhist teachings accessible to students.
The book provides a systematic presentation of the Bodhisattva's path. It explains how practitioners can cultivate bodhichitta, develop compassion toward others, overcome anger and harmful emotions, practise patience and diligence, strengthen meditation, and understand the emptiness of phenomena. The final chapter focuses on dedicating the merit of spiritual practice toward the liberation of all beings.
