Nanak Singh (1897–1971) was a prominent Punjabi novelist and writer, widely regarded as a pioneer of the Punjabi novel. He wrote numerous novels, poems, essays and other works and received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1962. Navdeep Suri, his grandson, translated Khooni Vaisakhi into English.
At the age of twenty-two, Nanak Singh was present at Jallianwala Bagh when British troops opened fire on peaceful protesters. He survived the massacre and later wrote Khooni Vaisakhi, a long poem describing the events surrounding the tragedy and its aftermath. The poem became a significant work of protest literature and was banned shortly after publication.
