Mahatma Gandhi: The Great Indian Way

The book traces important stages of Gandhi’s life, particularly his years in South Africa, the development of non-violent resistance and his leadership during India’s freedom struggle. Rao places particular emphasis on the idea of dharma and its relationship to Gandhian thought. The edition includes a new introduction by Makarand R. Paranjape.

Raja Rao was a pioneering Indian writer in English, born in Hassan, Mysore. He received the Padma Vibhushan, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Neustadt International Prize for Literature. His major works include Kanthapura, The Serpent and the Rope and The Cat and Shakespeare.

Mahatma Gandhi: The Great Indian Way presents Gandhi not only as a political leader but also as a thinker shaped by spirituality, ethics and the concept of dharma. Raja Rao moves between Gandhi’s experiences in South Africa and India, examining the emergence of non-violent resistance and his role in the Indian freedom movement.
