Overveiw

The book chronicles a classic coming-of-age transit out of a familiar comfort zone. Leaving his beloved town of Dehra behind, Rusty must deal with the realities of being an immigrant in the United Kingdom during his early twenties. The text covers the challenges of handling low-paying day jobs while relentlessly writing in dark rooms, only to find that getting a book accepted by a publisher is merely the first step in a complex journey

Meet the Author

Ruskin Bond is one of India's most beloved and widely read authors. Born in Kasauli in 1934, he has penned over 500 short stories, essays, and novels, including dozens of highly celebrated children's books. He has spent most of his life in the mountains of Mussoorie, which heavily inspires his crisp, nostalgic writing style. For his monumental contributions to Indian literature, he has been honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award (1992), the Padma Shri (1999), and the Padma Bhushan (2014)

Book Summary
    • In this fourth book of the chronological series, a twenty-something Rusty books a passage to England to sell his debut manuscript. He first settles at his aunt's home in Jersey before moving into rented lodgings in London, grinding through the days as a daytime clerk. Along the way, his imagination paints eccentric situations—including surreal dream encounters with Sherlock Holmes on Baker Street and meeting Rudyard Kipling at a museum. He experiences a warm "Calypso Christmas" with fellow lodgers and crosses paths with a Vietnamese girl named Vu-Phuong. After three years abroad, however, home sickness pulls him back. Realizing he belongs to the vibrant landscape of India, he returns to Dehra to establish himself as a full-time author
