Sudhir Kakar was a distinguished Indian psychoanalyst and writer whose work explored psychology, culture, religion and Indian society. He authored numerous influential works, including The Inner World, Shamans, Mystics and Doctors, Intimate Relations and The Colours of Violence.

At the centre of The Analyst and the Mystic is Sri Ramakrishna, whose visions and spiritual practices provide the basis for Kakar's examination of mystical consciousness. Rather than interpreting his experiences solely through traditional psychoanalysis, Kakar considers their role in the psychic transformation of the mystic. He also compares the healing practices of a mystical guru with those of a psychoanalyst, highlighting both their differences and the psychological value of religious experience.
