The Chronicle

• The story revolves around Ikhlaq and his family as they attempt to establish a home in Lahore. Alongside this contemporary story is a tazkirah, or family chronicle, tracing the family's history back to Persia. Husain blends Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic myths and legends with modern storytelling

Intizar Husain (1923–2016) was one of the most important Urdu writers of the twentieth century. His fiction frequently explored migration, memory, history, mythology and the trauma surrounding the Partition of India.

The Chronicle moves between the present and the distant past as Ikhlaq reads his family's ancestral chronicle and begins writing the final chapter himself. The novel reflects on displacement, identity, family memory and the search for belonging, while portraying Lahore during a period of political repression. Its mixture of mythology, history and contemporary life makes it a distinctive work of South Asian literature.
