Jawaharlal Nehru wrote The Discovery of India during his imprisonment at Ahmednagar Fort for his part in the Quit India Movement, across four years of confinement between 1942 and 1946. It is his homage to the country he was locked up for.
He begins in the ancient past — the Vedas, the Upanishads, the great texts and teachers — and carries the account through to the British Raj, taking in history, culture and philosophy together rather than separately. It is regarded as one of the finest books written on Indian history, and formed the basis of the 1988 television series Bharat Ek Khoj.
Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India. He was a freedom fighter and a central figure before and after independence. He was against the caste discrimination and establishes secular India. Apart of this, very few of us knew that Jawaharlal Nehru was a prolific writer as well.
He had written various books such as The Discovery of India, Glimpses of World History and his autobiography, Toward Freedom. Besides, Nehru was honoured with Bharat Ratna Award in the year 1955.
