Book Summary

The Last Mughal explores the final chapter of the Mughal Empire through the life of Bahadur Shah Zafar II and the events of 1857. Although Zafar possessed little real political power, he became a symbolic figurehead during the uprising. Dalrymple follows the transformation of Delhi from a vibrant cultural centre into a city devastated by war, tracing the experiences of soldiers, civilians, poets and other forgotten individuals caught in the conflict.
