The book traces Mohanlal’s journey to South Africa and connects his story with the wider history of Indian migration to places such as South Africa, Mauritius, and Britain.

Amrita Shah is a journalist, author, and former editor of Elle and Debonair. She has also written Ahmedabad: A City in the World, Vikram Sarabhai: A Life, and Telly-Guillotined.

Combining memoir, travelogue, and historical research, the book investigates how Indians travelled and settled across the Indian Ocean during the colonial period. It uses the author's family history to explore migration, trade, colonialism, and the development of Indian communities overseas.
