The Train to Tanjore

Set in Tanjore during India's struggle for independence, The Train to Tanjore follows Thambi, a young boy whose ordinary routine is disrupted by the growing political unrest surrounding the Quit India Movement. His interests in books, films and his dream of becoming an engineer are soon overshadowed by events unfolding around him.

As protests spread and the railway station is attacked, secret leaflets begin revealing information that does not appear in newspapers. Thambi is forced to make difficult choices and discover what courage and responsibility mean when history reaches his own doorstep. The book is part of the Songs of Freedom series, which explores the experiences of children across India during the freedom struggle.

In 1942, Thambi lives a relatively quiet life in Tanjore. He enjoys visiting the library, watching films at the Rajaram Electric Theatre and dreaming of becoming an engineer. But the arrival of the Quit India Movement transforms the familiar world around him.

When protests erupt, the railway station is vandalized and mysterious leaflets begin circulating, Thambi is drawn into the political turmoil. His journey becomes one of courage, conviction and growing awareness as he learns that even an ordinary young person can make difficult choices during extraordinary moments in history.
