Ummath: A Novel of Community and Conflict

The novel presents the Sri Lankan conflict from the perspective of people living through it rather than treating the war only as a political or military event.

The three central women come from different backgrounds and have different relationships with the conflict. Their stories show that the consequences of war extend far beyond the battlefield. Families are divided, identities become complicated, and women face violence, displacement, political pressure and restrictions on their choices.

Sharmila Seyyid is a Sri Lankan writer, poet and social activist. Her writing has focused on social injustice, women's experiences and political and religious issues.

She has written poetry as well as fiction, and Ummath is one of her major works. Her outspoken views and criticism of social injustice have also led to difficult personal circumstances, including a period of exile.

The story takes place during the long period of conflict in Sri Lanka, where ethnic and political tensions have deeply affected society.

The narrative brings together the lives of Thawakkul, Yoga and Theivanai.

Thawakkul is a social activist who becomes involved with the problems faced by her community. Her experiences expose the difficulties of living in a society where religious and political identities can strongly influence everyday life.
