Book Summary

Maharaja Ranjit Singh rose from the position of a relatively small Sikh chieftain to become the founder and dominant ruler of the Sikh Empire. Under his leadership, Punjab became a major political and military power, with an army regarded as one of the strongest in Asia at the time.

Based on sources in Persian, Punjabi and English and enriched by European travellers’ accounts, Khushwant Singh recreates the world of Ranjit Singh’s court and kingdom. The biography combines political and military history with a lively portrayal of the Maharaja’s character, ambitions and the splendour of the Sikh kingdom.
