Overveiw

Originally composed in Sanskrit, Somadeva’s Kathasaritsagara is one of the great story collections of classical Indian literature. This Puffin Classics edition presents selected tales in an accessible retelling by Rohini Chowdhury, making the richness of this traditional storytelling heritage accessible to a younger audience.

The stories feature an entertaining cast of kings, villagers, demons, demi-gods and magical beings, alongside golden swans, enchanted objects and even extraordinary wooden automatons. The collection offers young readers an engaging introduction to Indian folklore and classical literature.

Meet the Author
  • Somadeva was an eleventh-century Sanskrit poet and storyteller associated with Kashmir. His Kathasaritsagara—literally, the ‘Ocean of the Streams of Stories’—is a vast Sanskrit narrative tradition containing interconnected tales of adventure, romance, fantasy and folklore.

Rohini Chowdhury, who adapted and retold these stories for this edition, is a writer and storyteller whose literary interests include mythology, folklore, mathematics and history.

Book Summary

Puffin Classics: Tales from the Kathasaritsagara introduces readers to a selection of memorable stories from Somadeva’s monumental Sanskrit work. The collection includes tales of courage, sacrifice, cleverness, love and the unexpected, populated by ordinary people as well as supernatural creatures.

Among the featured stories is the tale of Phalabhuti, who narrowly escapes a terrible fate; Jimutavahana, who is prepared to sacrifice himself to save a snake; and Shringabhuja, who marries a rakshasa’s daughter. Together, these stories showcase the imagination, humour and narrative variety of classical Indian storytelling.
