Chhotu: A Tale of Partition and Love

Set against the rapidly changing world of 1947 Delhi, the story combines romance, humour, mystery and historical drama. Chhotu's ordinary life in the lanes of Chandni Chowk takes an unexpected turn when a seemingly simple problem leads him into dangerous territory.

Through Chhotu and Heer's experiences, the book explores belonging, friendship, longing and the meaning of freedom against the backdrop of Partition.

Varud Gupta is a writer and storyteller who previously studied finance at New York University and worked as a consultant before travelling extensively through the world's culinary cultures. His earlier work includes Bhagwaan Ke Pakwaan.

Ayushi Rastogi is an illustrator and designer with a background in communication design. Her work focuses on socially relevant storytelling, including projects concerning diversity, conservation and everyday social issues

In 1947, Chhotu lives in the bustling lanes of Chandni Chowk, balancing school with work as a paranthe cook. His attention is divided between everyday life and his growing feelings for Heer, a new girl at school.

But when the neighbourhood's supply of potatoes mysteriously disappears, Chhotu becomes involved in a chain of events involving corruption, crime and local gangsters. At the same time, the country around him is being transformed by Independence and the looming Partition.

As Chhotu struggles to understand love, friendship, fear and freedom, his personal journey becomes intertwined with one of the most turbulent periods in India's history.
