The First Canto introduces the philosophical and devotional framework of the Bhagavatam. It discusses questions about the purpose of life, spiritual knowledge, creation, devotion to Krishna and the relationship between the Supreme and living beings. The edition is part of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust's English publication of the Srimad-Bhagavatam.
The First Canto establishes the spiritual themes that continue throughout the Srimad-Bhagavatam. It introduces the importance of hearing and discussing sacred teachings, presents narratives involving sages and devotees, and explores questions concerning creation, dharma, devotion and spiritual realization. Through translation and commentary, the book presents a Vaishnava interpretation of the text for English-speaking readers.
