This book records Father Antoni de Monserrate's experiences during the Jesuit mission to Akbar's court at Fatehpur Sikri in the mid-1570s. It covers Mughal history, royal genealogy, geography, cultures, customs, and regions stretching from India into Central Asia.
J. S. Hoyland (1887–1957) was a Quaker missionary and writer who worked in India from 1912 to 1926. He studied at Cambridge and Hartford Seminary School of Missions and wrote extensively on India, history, religion, and social reconstruction. S. N. Banerjee, who annotated the work, was a professor of History at Mahindra College, Patiala, Punjab.
The book presents Monserrate's account of his travels and his visit to Emperor Akbar's court at Fatehpur Sikri. It describes Akbar's imperial world, traces genealogies from Timur and Genghis Khan, and records observations about the geography, cultures, customs, and peoples of India and Central Asia. The work provides an important European eyewitness perspective for understanding the Mughal Empire and sixteenth-century India.
