The story begins when Mr. Earnshaw brings the orphaned Heathcliff into the Earnshaw household. Heathcliff develops a profound bond with Catherine, but their relationship is complicated by social expectations and Catherine's decision to marry Edgar Linton. Feeling betrayed, Heathcliff leaves and later returns with a determination to take revenge on those he believes have wronged him.
Emily Brontë (1818–1848) was an English novelist and poet and one of the three famous Brontë sisters. Wuthering Heights, published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, was her only novel. Although it received mixed reactions initially, it later became recognized as one of the major works of English literature.
Wuthering Heights tells the tragic story of Heathcliff, an orphan adopted by the Earnshaw family, and Catherine Earnshaw, with whom he forms an intense emotional connection. Catherine eventually chooses to marry Edgar Linton, believing that the marriage will provide her with social security and status. Heathcliff is devastated and leaves.
