Overview

First published in 1944, Man-Eaters of Kumaon is Jim Corbett's classic account of the tigers and leopards he was called upon to hunt in the hills of northern India, among them the Champawat man-eater and the Leopard of Panar.

Written with the patience of a tracker and the eye of a naturalist, these are not trophy-hunting tales. Corbett walks the reader through the forest as he read it — a call, a pug mark, a shift in the light — and writes with real tenderness about the villagers living under the shadow of these animals. The book became an international bestseller and remains one of the finest pieces of writing on the Indian jungle.

Meet the Author
Jim Corbett

Edward James ‘Jim’ Corbett (25 July 1875–19 April 1955) was an Anglo-Indian hunter and tracker-turned conservationist, author and naturalist, famous for hunting a large number of man-eating tigers and leopards in India. He played a key role in creating a national reserve for the endangered Bengal tiger in what is now Uttarakhand. In 1957, the national park was renamed Jim Corbett National Park in his honour.
